This deep dive presents a trilogy of interconnected works by Jill Halstead and Wolfgang Schmid, which together explore the role of the arts and music in understanding end-of-life and care within contexts traditionally shaped by medical perspectives. The trilogy includes a peer-reviewed research article, Hearing Loss: Listening to End-of-Life Transitions, an Arts-Based Approach to Midlife Mourning (Halstead & Schmid, 2023); an artistic exhibition, Anatomy of Loss – Digital Arts Exposition (Halstead & Schmid, ongoing); and a short film, Last(ing) Music: An Essay on Music Therapy at End of Life (Schmid & Halstead, 2025).
While distinct in form, these three works are conceptually linked through a shared inquiry into music, listening, embodiment, and care. Collectively, they demonstrate how artistic methods and music research can offer interdisciplinary insight into loss and the ethics of care.
