Melodies of Sustainability: Exploring Identity Through Ethnography in the Intersection of Sound Art and Environmental Consciousness at Festivals

keywords: festivals, environmental sustainability, urban space, ethnography, sound studies

Based on the itinerant sound art festival, Lisboa Soa, whose values are centered on social and ecological intervention, it is pertinent to analyze the interventional character of creative practices related to sound and music in urban areas. Particularly, on issues related to the current environmental crisis. Through an intersection of the festival's fields of action, sound art and sound studies, this object of study presents itself as an interdisciplinary perspective on artistic and environmental discourses, making this event a source of material and social criticism. This festival is a multidisciplinary artistic space, which aims to promote exploratory projects and the relationship between artists, cultural agents and the public, articulating values of collective intervention in Lisbon's urban spaces. In this sense, my objective is to present a reflection on the different dimensions of my ethnographic work at this festival. This account will be based on an analysis of the social relations between the interviewees, the collaborators in this project and the constraints on access to the information sought, through the negotiation of the different dimensions of my identity as a sound artist and as a researcher. In this context, I will make some considerations about how my path as an artist has influenced the methodology used and the results of the research within the scope of fieldwork in the construction of a narrative, from the perspective of reflexive ethnography, collaborative ethnography and practice-led research.
