The Music4Change Research School is built on values of diversity and equity. Our goal is to create an environment where participants can exchange ideas openly, learn from one another, and collaborate across geographical, disciplinary, and institutional boundaries. To support this mission, all participants are expected to follow this Code of Conduct.
1. Professional Respect
- Treat all participants, presenters, and staff with courtesy and respect at all times.
- Academic disagreement is welcome, but criticism should remain constructive and focused on ideas, not individuals.
- Personal attacks, dismissive remarks, or disruptive behaviour are not acceptable.
2. Inclusive Communication
- Be mindful that English is a second (or third) language for most participants. ****Speak clearly, and allow time for responses.
- Avoid exclusionary language or inside references that may limit participation.
- Encourage dialogue that values diverse perspectives, methods, and cultural backgrounds.
3. Equal Participation
- Give space for all voices.
- Respect time limits during presentations and discussions.
- Recognise the contributions of others fairly in both formal and informal contexts.
4. Awareness of Power and Privilege
- Be attentive to the different power dynamics present in academic spaces, including those related to seniority, institutional position, cultural background, or privilege.
- Recognise that not all participants have the same access to resources, networks, or opportunities.
- Do not misuse authority, status, or privilege to exclude, pressure, or silence others.
- Mentors, supervisors, and senior scholars have a particular responsibility to model inclusive and respectful dialogue, and to ensure that all participants are able to contribute on equal terms.
5. Harassment-Free Environment
- Harassment, bullying, or intimidation of any kind—whether verbal, physical, or online—will not be tolerated.
