In my Ph.D. project I am researching kulturdag, a collaborative project between Norwegian primary schools and schools of music and performing arts (SMPA). Research in this area is mainly from the adults' perspective, both in terms of management and teacher level. Thus, more research is needed that deals with pupils' narratives and refers to the pupils' perspectives. My research question is, therefore: What are pupils' experiences, perceptions, and understandings of a collaborative project such as Kulturdag, and how are these expressed in music education practices?
This paper will present and discuss the ongoing fieldwork for my project, where I invite middle school-aged children to be my co-researchers. I am using the mosaic approach developed by Clark and Moss (2001) to generate data. This method represents how different parts together contribute to a holistic picture of children's worlds (Clark, 2005). Here, visual and artistic methods are combined with observation and interviews to give children various ways to explore their ideas about kulturdag that are not limited to verbal language. The method assumes that children are experts in their own lives and are skilled communicators and creators of meaning. I will invite 2-4 students to become my co-researchers, where we "create" and "make" research data together (Ellingson & Sotirin, 2020). My project also addresses who´s included and who´s not when it comes to research and development on SMPA and music education in general. My study invites students to actively participate in research and development about music education, something that, after all, is for the students.
