Implementing a research-oriented practicum: challenges and opportunities for Norwegian general teacher education

This paper reports on my Ph.D. project with the overall aim of describing preservice music teachers’ practicum experiences at a general teacher education in Norway and which competencies they develop that can be relevant for the future. In 2017, a five-year general teacher education was implemented with new requirements for preservice teachers to produce a practice-based and professionally oriented master thesis. A greater understanding of how research-based teacher education supports preservice teachers in their professional development is needed (Heikkilä et al., 2020). The purpose of this article is to illuminate preservice teachers, school-based mentors, and university-based mentors’ notions of a research-oriented approach in practicum.
The data for this article is part of an instrumental case study (Stake, 1994) of four preservice teachers’ practicum experiences during the 4th and 5th years (master level). Main data sources are based on field notes from pre-practicum meetings, transcriptions from mentoring sessions, and focus group interviews with preservice teachers.
Preliminary findings will be presented at the course.
